Preserving History through Education

Trustee Emeritus, Lou Browning sharing his knowledge during MAP WEEK!

The Kentucky Gateway Museum Center is home to one of the largest collections of historical maps. Over the past week we hosted our first “Map Week”, a week of seminars with Lou Browning covering a few significant maps from our collection. This event is a prime example of KYGMC fulfilling our mission of education and preservation. The two, go hand in hand!

Preservation is important because it allows us to hold onto the history, culture, and people that have shaped the development of our area. However, the education behind the preservation is what makes the work meaningful. Which is why we offer a variety of outlets for educational opportunities! While we are constantly curating new events for education, like Map Week, we also host a several regularly scheduled activities.

Every third Thursday of the month, at the Old Pogue Experience we have Wormald Trivia Night!  We kick off the evening with cocktails and conversation before diving into thirty trivia questions. Hosted by Danny Weddle and Ron Bailey, trivia night is always full of laughs and learning!

From spring to fall on every third Saturday of the month you can join us in the Research Library for Saturday Seminar. We welcome various speakers and cover a wide range of topics! Delicious coffee and cake are served while listening to an engaging presentation.

Many of our patrons are familiar with our Read On! Program as well. Every year, thousands of copies of a select title are distributed throughout the area. To enhance the experience of reading, community activities are offered by KYGMC. Dinners, dancing, teas, seminars, and more are planned and hosted throughout the month!

One simple way of learning is by listening to other reminisce! Trivia isn’t the only thing board member Ron Bailey hosts for us. Everything Maysville takes place every Tuesday at the Old Pogue Experience.  If you like spontaneity and community this program may be of interest to you!

Along with our regularly scheduled programs we also offer outreach for students! Field trips for all ages, medley boxes to supplement teacher lessons, and Museum Scouts are some of the ways we can offer educational learning to the students in the area.

The Kentucky Gateway Museum Center takes education and learning seriously, and we have many plans to increase our reach and create new ways to learn for our community! Stay up to date on upcoming plans by following us on facebook and checking out kygmc.org/educational-outreach
