For 50 years, the Simon Kenton Festival has helped bring the history of Old Washington, Kentucky, to life. What began as a celebration honoring frontier figure Simon Kenton has grown into an important tradition for Mason County and the surrounding region. The festival connects yesterday’s history with the people of today.
The Simon Kenton festival does more than simply tell history—it allows people to experience it. Through reenactments, pioneer demonstrations, historic building tours, music, crafts, food, and activities for children, visitors can get a glimpse of what life was like generations ago. The historic setting of Old Washington truly allows visitors to time travel and walk the same streets as Simon Kenton himself and that makes that experience even more meaningful.
Reaching the 50-year milestone is historically significant. It is the longest running festival in Mason County! For half a century, generations of families, volunteers, artisans, performers, historians, and local organizations have helped keep the festival alive. The Kentucky Gateway Museum Center is recognizing the anniversary as an opportunity to celebrate regional history and preservation.
After 50 years, the Simon Kenton Festival has become more than an annual event. It is part of the history it celebrates. Its longevity demonstrates the community's commitment to remembering where it came from while creating new memories for future generations. Celebrating 50 years is therefore not only a celebration of Simon Kenton and Old Washington—it is a celebration of the people who have worked to preserve Mason County's story and ensure that it continues to be shared.
